Words About Footwear

(By: Tema Stein)

Toddlers

  • Barefoot if possible when in the house
  • For new walkers, can have flexible footwear in the house
  • When outdoors, may want high tops to give more security, but not necessary.
  • Need rubber soles for grip.
Selecting the Right Shoes for the Right Activity

  • No flip flops
  • No crocs
  • No flimsy sandals
…….unless going to the beach or at a swimming pool
Runners should:

  • Have firm heel counter
  • Bend with the child’s toes
  • Flex at the ball of the foot but not twist
How to choose the right shoe size

  • Should have a thumb’s width from the longest toe to the end of the shoe
  • The bend in the shoe should occur at the ball of the foot and not at the end of the shoe
  • Can go up a ½ size if the crease in the shoe is at the correct place
NEVER EVER WEAR HAND ME DOWN SHOES OR BOOTS OR SKATES
